Location & Venue

Gore is one of the main hubs of Southland, hence it has an abundance of things to see and do!

Keep busy on the Waikaka Way Walkway, at the Hamilton Park BMX track, or at the impressive Multisports Complex, which is comprised of an aquatic centre, an ice rink and an indoor sports stadium. Shop til you drop down Gore’s main streets or check out the Eastern Southland Art Gallery. Fish in the Mataura River and land your dream trout. Learn about local history through the Gore Heritage Trail, the Gore Historical Museum, the Hokonui Moonshine Museum, and the Hokonui Pioneer Village and Museum. Relax, picnic, and let the kids run around in the Gore Public Gardens or Bannerman Park. Or catch a film at the SBS St James Theatre. There’s something to suit every itinerary in Gore!

We recommend a short drive to Mataura to visit the Museum at Clematis Cottage, or the Croydon Aviation Museum, just 15 minutes from Gore in the other direction.

Southland’s surrounding attractions include Invercargill with the famous Bill Richardson Transport World, visit E Hayes & Son and see the genuine World’s Fastest Indian, Queens Park and the Invercargill Public Art Gallery.

An hour’s drive from Gore is scenic Catlins, a must do if you have some time to spare. Here you’ll find a world of native forests fringed by high cliffs, deserted sandy beaches, sparkling bays, cascading waterfalls, hidden lakes, blowholes, caves, picturesque lighthouses and even a petrified forest. These environments are home to an array of fauna, from native birds, to seals, sea lions, dolphins, and penguins. Take time to stop at Curio Bay and for something different: The Lost Gypsy Curios & Coffee is an automata gallery and theatre experience created from the ground up by New Zealand artist Blair Somerville.

If you have some time, head west and spend a couple of nights in stunning and rugged Fiordland - Te Anau, Manapouri and Milford. Or make a holiday of it and visit Stewart Island – highly recommended!! Or experience some of the great NZ Walks.
